Description
Barium chloride dihydrate (BaCl₂·2H₂O) is a white, crystalline compound widely used in chemical analysis and industrial applications. In laboratories, it plays a key role in detecting sulfate ions by forming a white precipitate of barium sulfate when mixed with sulfate-containing solutions.
The compound is also used in the production of other barium-based chemicals, such as barium hydroxide and barium carbonate, which are essential in manufacturing pigments, glass, and certain plastics. In water treatment, barium chloride dihydrate helps remove sulfates and other impurities, while in the oil and gas industry, it is used to control the density of drilling fluids. Despite its usefulness, barium chloride dihydrate is toxic, and it requires careful handling with appropriate safety precautions to prevent exposure.
