Description
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a powerful oxidizing agent commonly used in various applications, including disinfection, sterilization, cleaning, and some industrial processes. The 30% concentration of hydrogen peroxide is highly concentrated, and due to its reactive and potentially hazardous nature.
Concentration and Dilution:
- 30% Hydrogen Peroxide is highly concentrated and needs to be diluted before use in most applications. If you need a lower concentration, you can dilute it with distilled water.
- Example: To make a 3% solution, dilute the 30% solution by mixing 1 part of 30% H₂O₂ with 9 parts of water.
Applications of Hydrogen Peroxide:
- Disinfection & Sterilization: Used as a disinfectant for cleaning surfaces, sterilizing medical equipment, or treating wounds (in diluted form).
- Oxidizing Agent: Used in chemical reactions, as a bleach in industries (e.g., paper or textile), and in environmental treatments (e.g., water purification).
- Hair Bleaching: Often used in the cosmetic industry for hair bleaching (after dilution).
- Antiseptic: Used in some medical settings (usually diluted to lower concentrations) to clean wounds and prevent infection.
Safety Precautions:
- Handling: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, and lab coat.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed and upright to avoid spillage.
- Corrosive Nature: Hydrogen peroxide at 30% is highly corrosive and can cause severe irritation or damage to skin and eyes. Inhalation of vapors or mist can also be harmful.
- In Case of Spillage: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Neutralize the spill with a dilute solution of sodium thiosulfate or sodium bicarbonate before cleaning.
