Difference between distilled water, demineralized water, and deionized water

Water is an essential element in our daily life. Without water, we can’t think of a life.  That means pure water is life. According to our uses, we can see the different types of water in our life. Here we know the three types of water – distilled water, demineralized water, and deionized water.

Some types of water are given below:

  • Drinking water
  • Distilled water
  • Demineralized water
  • Deionized water
  • HPLC Grade water etc.

Now we are discussing the difference between distilled water, demineralized water, and deionized water:

What is distilled water?

Distilled water is one kind of processing water that has been boiled into steam and condensed back into liquid water in a separate container. Contaminations in the original water that don’t boil below or near the boiling point of water remain in the original vessel. therefore, distilled water is a type of purified water. So we can say that distilled water is ‍pure boiled water, which is cooled after boiling.

What is demineralized water?

Demineralized water is filtered water that has been purified in such a way that its minerals and salt ions are removed. For example, Calcium, Chloride, Sulphate, Magnesium, different types of ions, Sodium, etc. are removed from this water. Demineralized water is also called demi water or deionized water which means demineralized and deionized is the same water. But demineralized water is generally considered different from distilled water.

What is Deionized water?

Deionized water is the same as demineralized water, which simply means the removal of ions (cations, anions, etc.). Also, we can say that deionized water is purified water that has been mechanically filtered or processed to remove impurities and make it suitable for use.

Let’s go to see at a glance the difference between distilled water, demineralized water, and deionized water:

Distilled WaterDemineralized WaterDeionized Water
Boiled waterFiltered WaterFiltered Water
It’s virus, bacteria, and other biological contaminants free. It’s mineral and salt ions freeit’s ions free
It’s boiled into steam and condensed back into liquidcompletely filtered of minerals via (electro) ion-exchangecompletely filtered of ions via (electro) ion-exchange
Distilled water uses for steam irons, aquariums, watering plants, car cooling systems, laboratory experiments, certain medical use, etc.Uses for lab applications and testing, Carwash, Wash water for computer chip manufacture, lead-acid batteries, Boiler feed, Laser cutting, optimization of fuel cells, and steam raising applications.Uses as a reagent in laboratories, medical cooling systems, industrial machinery, car engines, fire extinguishers, etc.
