Mechanism of Measurement

The RMR-2009 Dissolved Oxygen Test Kit uses a modified Winkler method, a well-established chemical method for determining oxygen levels in water.

Step 1 – Oxygen Fixation

Manganous ions react with dissolved oxygen in the presence of potassium hydroxide to form manganese oxide precipitate.

Step 2 – Iodine Formation

After acid is added, manganese oxide hydroxide oxidizes iodide ions to iodine. The formulation is designed to prevent nitrate interference and does not use toxic azide compounds.

Step 3 – Titration Reaction

The iodine produced is proportional to the dissolved oxygen concentration and is titrated using thiosulfate solution until the iodine is reduced back to iodide ions.
