A List of Acids and their Uses in Daily Life

The article “A List of Acids and their Uses in Daily Life” is very important for chemistry students and acid users. This article helps us to know the acids name and formulas of acids and their uses in our everyday life.

What is Acid?

An acid is a chemical substance that donates hydrogen ions to water and combines with certain metals to form salts. Acids have a sour taste and turn some dyes red. For example Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4).

A list of acids and their uses that are popular in Bangladesh:

SL No.Acids NameSome Uses of Acids
1Boric AcidBoric acid is used as a fireproofing agent for wood, as a preservative, and as an antiseptic. It is used in the manufacture of glass, pottery, enamels, glazes, cosmetics, cement, porcelain, leather, carpets, hats, soaps, and artificial gems, and in tanning, printing, dyeing, painting, and photography. It is also used in laboratories for research and analysis.
2Chromic AcidIt is used in ceramic glass and colored glass. Chromosulfuric acid or sulfochromic mixture is a strong oxidizing agent, used to clean laboratory glassware. It has the ability to brighten raw brass and hence is also used in the instrument repair industry.
3Formic AcidFormic acid is used as a preservative and antibacterial agent. It is also useful in the manufacture of leather and rubber. It is used as a miticide by beekeepers.
4Hydrochloric AcidHydrochloric acid is widely used in Bangladesh. It is used in chloride, fertilizer and dye production, electroplating, and photographic, textile and rubber industries. Hydrochloric acid is ‍also corrosive to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Dilute hydrochloric acid is also used for cleaning.
5Nitric AcidNitric acid is used to produce ammonium nitrates, dyes, and fertilizers. It is also used in making explosives, as an oxidizer, used in the removal of the wart, used as a chemical doping agent in electrochemistry, etc.
6Phosphoric AcidPhosphoric acid is used as a component of fertilizers (80% of total use), detergents, and many household cleaning products.
7Sulfuric AcidVarious concentrations of this acid, are used for various purposes. This acid is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, pigments, dyes, drugs, explosives, detergents, and inorganic salts and acids, as well as in petroleum refining and metallurgical processes.
8Acetic AcidAcetic acid is used as a food preservative and food additive. Acetic acid is used in large quantities to make a variety of products such as textile printing, dyes, photographic chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and inks for rubber and plastics.
9Ascorbic AcidAscorbic acid helps heal wounds in the body. Needed to increase the absorption of iron from plant foods and support the immune system. It acts as an antioxidant to protect your cells against free radicals, which can contribute to heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.
10Citric AcidCitric acid is mainly used as a flavoring and preservative agent. Especially in soft drinks and candy. It is also used to stabilize or preserve medicine and as a disinfectant. Citric acid is a chemical compound derived from lemon juice.
11Lactic AcidLactic acid is an organic acid that is used in tanning leather and dyeing wool. It is used as a flavoring agent and preservative in processed cheese, salad dressings, pickles, and carbonated beverages. And is also used as a raw material or a catalyst in numerous chemical processes.
12Stearic AcidStearic acid is mainly used in hundreds of personal care products, including moisturizers, sunscreens, makeup, soaps, and baby lotions. It is also used in adhesives, lubricants, laundry products, and paper products. Research shows that the ingredient can help heal burns.
13Tartaric AcidTartaric acid is often used as an acidulant in grape- and lime-flavored drinks, gelatin desserts, jams, jellies, and hard sour desserts. Acidic monopotassium salts, commonly known as ‘cream of tartar’, are used in baking powders and yeast formulations.
14Uric AcidUric acid may play a fundamental role in tissue repair by mobilizing endothelial cells.
